A few stories from our local area coordinators.
Hailey is 23 and totally dependent on her family. For many years, her mother and father and siblings have taken it in turns to look after Hailey’s needs overnight. They received little in the way of supports, and struggled to make ends meet. We worked with the family to develop a new plan, which was approved by the NDIA. Now they receive three times the amount of funding, allowing them to begin to do things as a whole family again. In fact, for the first time in 23 years, they will be able to take a holiday next year. We love hearing about the family’s progress, and really appreciate the regular updates on how much better they’re doing now.
In her mid-40s, Lisa had a genuine fear of meeting new people, and suffered from anxiety. That meant she had very little contact with her community, but she desperately wanted to change things. During our first plan meeting with Lisa, she identified ways in which she would like to move forward and begin making connections to her outside world. As a LAC, a big part of our role is to offer information on what is available in the community, and who can help support the necessary access. Once Lisa had the resources she needed, it wasn’t long before she was looking for her own service providers and negotiating her own needs. We’re thrilled for Lisa, and can’t wait to hear all about her adventures.
Lockie was a new participant who had no ongoing services and required immediate supports from an occupational therapist, as well as necessary equipment. Working with the planner we were able to get his goals and needs submitted and the plan approved within a week. After meeting with new service providers in the area, we found an occupational therapist to assist with supports while Lockie moved to a new unit. He went into hospital during the set up stage and between us, the occupational therapist and Lockie, we were able to set up his NDIS services and have his equipment ready in his new unit for when he arrived home.
And some words of thanks from our participants.
“I am writing to you to thank you so very much for all your wonderful help in getting Jack’s approval for NDIS. We were very apprehensive and had no idea about the workings of NDIS, however you were kind, extremely patient and explained everything thoroughly.
“When you called me last night to confirm Jack’s approval, I couldn't believe it at first. For ten years we have struggled to keep things together. It is overwhelming to me that we are finally getting the assistance Jack needs, so I apologise for crying on the phone.
“It is a huge burden lifted off, it will mean our lives, and our family unit and my marriage will be far less stressed. So, thank you, thank you, thank you, and I know you will keep helping others who are in difficulty too.”
“I just wanted to extend to you our sincere thanks for your marvellous effort on our behalf for obtaining a wonderful NDIS plan result. Right from the moment you entered our lives I was impressed with your professionalism. You arrived when you said you would, which in itself is a great quality these days. And from the outset you explained and spoke to both my wife and I with respect and understanding.
“You took the time to make sure that each step, each question and all the information was easy for us to digest. You answered all my questions with the utmost courtesy and let us know what everything was. Your courtesy and respect put us at ease immediately and made us much more aware and comfortable with this daunting and new era for Jenny to be entering into.
“So, once again thank you for all time, patience and help. We look forward to a long lasting relationship with you and your team.”
