Local area coordinators

Local area coordinators (LACs) assist people with disability to access the NDIS. Once you’re eligible for the NDIS, we’ll work with you to identify your goals for your first NDIS plan. We’ll also support you in exploring ways to achieve these goals and help you understand how the funding in your plan works. You choose who will provide your NDIS supports.

Find out more information about local area coordinators and the NDIS on the NDIS website

What does a LAC do?

Local area coordinators have four key roles:

  • We link you to the NDIS, to information and support in the community
  • We gather information with you for the development of your First Plan
  • Where identified, we assist you to start your NDIS journey by supporting you to implement your plan and connect you to community
  • We work with the local community to promote a more welcoming and inclusive environment for people with disability

What we don’t do:

  • We are not support coordinators
  • We don’t approve the funding amount for NDIS plans

What is the difference between a LAC and an NDIA planner?

For your First Plan, a LAC will meet with you to gather information that forms the basis of the NDIS plan development. The NDIA planner will then build the funding from the information gathered by the LAC. It’s also the responsibility of the NDIA planner (or an NDIA delegate) to approve the funding in the plan. The plan reflects the reasonable and necessary supports of the person with a disability. A LAC will assist you with the implementation of your NDIS plan.

If you have high supports needs, a plan may be developed by an NDIS planner and implementation will be completed by a support coordinator.
