Care for your feet

If you are 60 years of age or over and live within the suburb boundaries of Uniting War Memorial Hospital boundaries, our podiatry unit can provide foot assessments and treatments.

How we can help

  • Provide long term strategies if you are at risk of developing foot complications
  • If you have diabetes, we can undertake an annual foot assessment which can include self-care advice, treatment and referrals if required
  • Assess ulceration, infection and/or foot complications
  • Provide an individual treatment plan including self-care advice.

Important things you need to know

The podiatry service is unable to offer general nail care to all patients whilst in hospital.

To access the service, you must have one or more of the following medical conditions:

  • Current foot ulceration, foot infection or Charcots arthropathy
  • Evidence of Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Evidence of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
  • Foot deformity that may predispose to ulceration
  • Other conditions relating to foot pathology, foot deformity or healing ability (such as Diabetes Mellitus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, renal disease, organ transplant) that may predispose you to biomechanical issues and/or risk of ulceration.

Uniting War Memorial Hospital and Sydney Hospital Inpatients referred to the podiatry department must be able to transfer to the podiatry treatment chair independently.

Get started

  • Initial patient referrals must be made via NNARC (Northern Network Access and Referral Centre). To get in touch with NNARC call on (02) 9369 0400. A referral will then be requested to be sent to NNARC (either post or fax on (02) 9369 0101). Clients will then be notified of their appointment time.
  • Each new patient presenting to the clinic must have a referral from their General Practitioner or specialist containing the reason for referral, full medical history and a list of current medications
  • Each existing patient will be required to bring in a new referral on an annual basis containing a full medical history and list of current medications

All patients assessed and discharged from the service will be provided with information on other available podiatry options to discuss with family, carers and their General Practitioner/specialist.

Private podiatry services can also be considered on discharge from War Memorial Hospital / Sydney Hospital. Some private podiatry services will provide home visit consultations to those that may be unable to attend a private clinic upon leaving hospital.
