At Uniting, we believe in taking real steps to make the world a better place. We work to inspire people, enliven communities and confront injustice. Uniting informs debate and decision-making among practitioners, policy makers, politicians, opinion leaders and the broader community. Our campaigns and advocacy work help us speak up for those who may not ordinarily have a voice.
Underpinning all community service activities of the Uniting Church is its strong commitment to social justice and advocacy. This is reflected in the statement from the inaugural worship service for the Uniting Church in 1977, which urged Church members "to engage in a fearless prophetic ministry in relation to social evils which deny God's will for justice and peace (and) to act with God alongside the oppressed, the hurt, the poor".
Uniting leads social justice and human rights policy for the Uniting Church, which may be taken to the annual meeting of the NSW and ACT Synod for consideration. This policy work is based on intensive and wide-ranging research and theological reflection.
Uniting provides information and resources to the Church and community on social justice issues. Uniting also speaks out on behalf of those we serve through submissions and representations to government policy makers. We also provide a voice to others by sharing insights through the media.
