Become a foster carer
Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster carer with Uniting. We work with carers in the following regions:
- West and South West Sydney
- Mid-North Coast in areas around Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Forster and Taree
- Orana Far West in areas around Dubbo, Orange, Parkes and Coonabarabran.

We’ll make a time meet with you to answer any questions you have and help you learn more about becoming a carer.
How the application process works
1. Assessment sessions
After our initial meeting, you’ll be invited to a series of free assessment sessions. These sessions help us learn more about you and check you’re the right fit to become a carer.
Please note that all potential carers and any other adults residing in their household will need to obtain a Working with Children Check clearance before the assessment sessions can begin.
You’ll also need to complete the carer training course which is held during the assessment process.
3. Notification of outcome
Once the assessment process is complete we’ll let you known in writing whether your application has or has not been approved.

If your application is approved, we’ll be in contact with you when a child or young person is matched to the type of care you have been authorised to provide.

If you’re not approved, you will be able appeal if your application to become a carer. You are entitled to be given feedback on why you haven’t been approved and have the decision reviewed.
When surveyed, 96% of current carers felt the process was really straight forward or thorough but fair. Nearly 90% said they felt the application and assessment process was reasonable or fairly quick.
