Family services and community engagement
Because children matter
Uniting aims to achieve a fair and just society through supporting children, young people and families. We bring together programs and initiatives to support people across their life span.
These services aim to strengthen communities and include support services, information, referral, support groups and education programs. They have a prevention focus to keep communities and families strong and out of the child protection system.
Early Family Options
Early Family Options is an early intervention program that supports young parents (under 25 years) who live in the Wyong or Gosford Local Government Areas (LGAs), as well as parents with children 0-8 years old who live in the Warnervale/Wadalba and Blue Haven/San Remo districts. The program provides flexible ongoing support to families in their own homes. We assist families in developing coping skills, encourage positive parenting, assist families in establishing links to their local community and provide access to a range of specialist services where needed.
Family support services
Uniting provides a range of family support services including community based family centres, parenting groups, services for fathers, and support for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Family and community centres
Uniting centres aim to reduce isolation, and give you the opportunity to learn from others and their life experiences.
We use a mixed approach including, family counselling, group work, parent education, train-the-trainer and family conferences, all focused on solutions and skill development based on what your family needs.
We build upon existing community strengths and encourage all families who attend to form their own support network through peers and befriending programs. Together, families and communities develop the skills to keep their children safe and help to build a nurturing environment.
Family Referral Service
Funded by NSW Health, the Family Referral Service (FRS) works with all existing services in a community and assists young people, families and their children to secure the best support available with a focus on child safety.
Similar to traditional playgroups, supported playgroups provide opportunities for parents to meet and share experiences while their children play and develop social skills. We provide parents with support, information and links to other family services in their local community.
Support with school / Positive learning
We offer support for students who may be truanting, non-school attenders, and class avoiders or may be experiencing a range of issues including bullying, family breakdown or isolation, which create barriers to positive learning in mainstream schooling.
The program focuses on learning themes such as surf-life saving/first aid, and provides a range of activities via group work and individual casework to improve and develop academic, social and life skills. The student’s ultimate goal is to make a successful transition back to school and attend regularly.
Uniting runs programs in Western Sydney, South West Sydney, the Central Coast (Gosford and Wyong shires), the Mid-North Coast (Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Taree) and Orana Far West.
